Notts Recycles Go Green Challenge-Day 19

Grow your way to reducing your carbon footprint

Day 19 Challenge

Today’s challenge is to get planning to grow your own.

Some of our food is transported half-way around the globe before it reaches the supermarket, which is bad news for combatting climate change.

Choosing to buy locally produced food is a better option but growing your own fruit and veg means no food miles at all! It’s in season, it’s fresh, there’s no excess packaging and you can even grow varieties that you can’t find in the shops.

Few of us can become fully sustainable in our veg production but every little helps in our collective efforts.

Do you have a patch of garden that you could turn into a veg bed?

Or maybe just a few pots to get started? Even a balcony or windowsill can provide you with a little crop so see if you can track down some seed today and make preparations to get growing next season.

And if you’re looking for some seasonal recipes to make with all your produce, why not check out our seasonal recipe cards.
