Notts Recycles Go Green Challenge-Day 22

Leave it Out!

Day 22 Challenge

Today’s task is all about why some things should NOT go in your recycling bin.

Most people in Nottinghamshire use their recycling service properly but occasionally some unpleasant and even dangerous things can turn up at the Materials Recovery Facility amongst the recyclables.

Make sure that you keep these out of your recycling bin:

  • Nappies – the cardboard box they come in may be recyclable, but the nappy definitely is NOT! This also applies to any other sanitary or hygiene products. These should be wrapped in a plastic bag and put into your general waste bin. Dirty nappies that turn up at the sorting facility put the workers at risk and make their important job unpleasant.
  • Food – waste food should be placed in your general waste bin - this includes any takeaway boxes or food trays! We're unable to recycle pizza boxes etc in Notts so please put them in the general waste bin. Takeaway tubs are a handy for storing leftovers or meal prep so give them a wash and why not reuse?! It’s important to make sure that you rinse out your food tins and squeezy plastic sauce bottles before popping them in your recycling bin and checking that all plastic bottles are empty of their contents and without their lids. Doing this will help keep your recycling bin smelling sweet and will make sure that things like paper and card are not ruined.

If you’re struggling for space in your rubbish bin, contact your local council who might be able to give you a bigger or extra one.
